Work-based learning encompasses formal and informal programs involving learning in the workplace or simulated activities. It allows students to become aware of, explore, and experience the world of work in preparation for their future careers.
How work-based learning benefits students
- Students acquire and demonstrate general employability skills
- Students acquire an understanding of the changing nature of work and workplaces
- Students acquire an understanding of the changing patterns of employment in industries where significant labour growth is expected.

The delivery of Work-based Learning to School Students Requirements and Guidelines provides guidance and parameters around the delivery and provision of work-based learning to school students.
Department for Education, Children and Young People (DECYP) staff coordinating work placement should still refer to the Work-based Learning Policy and the Work-based Learning Procedure on the DECYP staff intranet. Staff working in Catholic and Independent Schools should refer to their own sector policies and procedures.
